Tragic head-on collision claims lives of father and daughter in Virginia

LOS ANGELES, Nov 23, (Agencies): On Tuesday afternoon, a tragic accident claimed the lives of a father and his daughter when their vehicle veered into the path of a box truck on a rural highway in Virginia, authorities reported.

The head-on collision took place at approximately 4:16 pm local time on Route 13/Lankford Highway in Accomack County, just 20 minutes from the Maryland border, according to the Virginia State Police.

Augusto Santos Aguilar, a 69-year-old father, was driving a Mazda CX-30 when he crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a Freightliner truck, as disclosed by the Virginia State Police. Aguilar was rushed to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Tragically, the man’s daughter, 17-year-old Alyssa Marie Aguilar, seated in the back of the crossover vehicle, lost her life on impact. Alyssa’s mother, Maria Aguilar, occupying the front passenger seat, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, Maryland.

The driver of the box truck, 63-year-old Ervin Jose Mizriky, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. As of now, no charges have been announced.

Following the collision, local authorities temporarily closed down the highway in both directions. The Virginia State Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the incident, with early images from the scene suggesting slippery road conditions.

The family, en route from Florida to Annapolis, Maryland, to visit relatives, was involved in the heartbreaking accident. A GoFundMe campaign, started by Alyssa’s sister, Ivory Cerezo, seeks assistance in transporting the victims’ bodies back to Florida. In a poignant tribute on the fundraising page, Cerezo remembered her recently graduated sister as a loving and accomplished young girl who excelled in singing, cooking, and dancing. She also fondly described her stepfather, Augie, as a loving husband, father, friend, and grandfather known for lightening the mood with his dad jokes.
