SEOUL, South Korea, Jan 1: Following a powerful earthquake that struck Japan on Monday, South Korea’s east coast experienced a tsunami with a height under one meter (3.3 ft), as reported by South Korea’s meteorological agency. The agency anticipates the possibility of more and larger waves in the coming hours.

The initial tsunami wave that reached South Korea’s coast measured 67 cm (2.2 ft), and the meteorological agency cautions that it could amplify in size in the subsequent waves, persisting for over 24 hours.

Simultaneously, North Korea, through its state radio, issued tsunami warnings for its coastline, expressing concerns about potential waves exceeding 2 meters, as reported by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

In response to the situation, South Korea’s Gangwon province urged residents to exercise caution and evacuate to higher ground, as communicated by the Ministry of Interior and Safety. Emergency messages from the east coast province advised residents to stay away from the coast and seek refuge in elevated areas. The city of Samcheok specifically recommended relocating to areas higher than three-storey buildings, according to the ministry’s guidance.
