Court jails lawyer in blackmail for ‘cash’

KUWAIT CITY, May 6: The Criminal Court has ruled to imprison a lawyer for two years with a guarantee of KD1,000 to suspend the implementation of the sentence as he was convicted of blackmailing a citizen to obtain a sum of KD20,000 and threatening to accuse him of assaulting his client. Meanwhile, the court acquitted the accused of forcing the complainant to sign documents proving the existence of a debt, a car sales contract and a receipt. Case files indicate the complainant said the lawyer summoned him to his office and blackmailed him and threatened to accuse him of assaulting his client if he does not pay KD20,000. He also claimed that he was forced to sign documents proving the existence of the debt, a car sales contract and a receipt for the same amount.
