THERE is no doubt that the illness of the head of state negatively affects the state’s movements, and leads to a kind of drought in its relations with the surroundings and the world. What if this drought continued for about five years, starting with the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad and his late successor Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad, who suffered from health challenges throughout three years of his rule, shifting most of the burden to his crown prince, who had to work on all fronts – internal and external – at the same time?

That is why Kuwait lived in an almost paralyzed state throughout those years, and was close to isolation at all levels, resulting in several internal crises during that period. Because of this, the current leadership had to exert double the efforts for dealing with the consequences, and had to work on reviving Kuwait and its people at the same time. From the time of the illnesses of the late Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad, and his successor the late Sheikh Nawaf Al- Ahmad, Kuwait’s international image changed, especially in its relations, which have been active for decades, and it has its own connections and tours in regional and international affairs.

Today, the new leadership has committed itself to working with all its might, doubling its efforts due to its conviction that time does not accept the luxury of being occupied with pointless conflicts. There is no doubt that observers saw the extent of credit that Kuwait enjoys in the Gulf and Arab countries through the state visits made by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al- Sabah, and its fruitful outcomes that will undoubtedly appear in the days to come. In this regard, it is known that visits by country leaders are aimed to check on developments in the capitals they visit, exchange advice on the problems facing countries, and build their vision on that.

This is especially if some of them are new to the leadership, and have many aspirations regarding their country. They are moving with confident steps towards working on pioneering acts, such as the case with the Sultanate of Oman where Sultan Hathaim bin Tariq is working to complete the Omani renaissance. The United Arab Emirates witnessed many positive developments in the few years of the era of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed. The Kingdom of Bahrain made great strides in thoughtful development. Qatar has become a pillar in major projects. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the reform movement is led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman based on the directives of King Salman bin Abdulaziz. These are all valuable lessons to be learned from. What if the leader is determined to exert every effort to revive the state and restore its regional and international standing, much like the new Kuwaiti leadership? This vision, outlined in His Highness’s speeches, provides a clear direction forward.

That is why these state tours were necessary in order to obtain field knowledge of developments in those countries, and also to bring Kuwait back to the forefront again. It goes without saying that these tours will not stop at the countries that His Highness visited, as it is clear that they may be completed soon, in order to restore to Kuwait its glories and close relations at all levels. Today, the country is under a decisive and determined leadership with a strong will in the process of achieving leadership, and for Kuwait to turn into a factory of ideas and initiatives, better than it was in the past.
