LOS ANGELES, May 11: Oprah Winfrey has issued an apology for her contribution to diet culture, acknowledging her past role during a WeightWatchers live special titled “Making the Shift.”

During the program aired on Thursday, the renowned talk show host reflected on her decades-long involvement in promoting weight loss and dieting, expressing regret for perpetuating harmful messages.

“It’s really hard to love your own body when the whole world is telling you it wasn’t worth loving,” Winfrey remarked, highlighting the damaging impact of societal pressures.

“I’ve been a steadfast participant in this diet culture,” Winfrey admitted during the special. “Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years, through online — I’ve been a major contributor to it.”

Winfrey recounted pivotal moments in her career, including a segment on her talk show featuring a “wagon of fat” that she now considers one of her biggest regrets. She also shared her personal struggles with yo-yo dieting, tracing back to a 1985 interview with Joan Rivers.

The WeightWatchers special aimed to spark a new conversation around weight, health, and self-acceptance. Winfrey emphasized the importance of ending body shaming and empowering individuals to embrace their own paths towards wellness.

The program featured guests such as WeightWatchers CEO Sima Sistani and body acceptance advocate Katie Sturino, facilitating discussions on personal journeys and the complexities of weight management.

Winfrey’s apology comes months after she disclosed her ongoing weight loss journey, including the use of medication. In previous specials and interviews, she has been transparent about her struggles with weight fluctuations.

As Winfrey continues to advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance, her message resonates with many navigating similar challenges. Ultimately, she urges individuals to prioritize their well-being and find contentment in their own unique journeys toward health.
