Kuwait urges restraint amid regional tensions

KUWAIT CITY, April 14 : Kuwait’s Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed on Sunday its deep concern over military escalation in the region, and the mounting detrimental ramifications on both regional and international stability and security. Kuwait, via Ministry-issued statement, called for practicing self-restraint to avoid risks of such escalation and its ramifications. It underlined the importance of UN Security Council’s adherence to its responsibilities of safeguarding international peace and security and avoiding wars via guaranteeing the commitment of the international community. The ministry stressed the necessity of addressing the root cause of tensions, and adopting diplomacy in conflict settlement, all to ensure regional stability.

On Saturday evening, the Kuwaiti cabinet convened an extraordinary meeting at Messila Palace under the chairmanship of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. The cabinet affirmed keenness on responding to all regional incidents and surrounding conditions in a way that protects the security and stability of Kuwait amid the accelerating developments in the region. The meeting heard presentations by several ministers on the precautionary measures made by their respective ministries and competent state agencies to address any eventuality, particularly in the security domain, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Shereeda Al-Mousherji following the meeting. The cabinet reaffirmed commitment to protecting the security and stability of the country and ensuring the basic services and needs of the citizens and expatriates.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information and Culture Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi was briefed on the Ministry’s Crisis Management Committee regarding preparations to monitor the current developments in the region and review the procedures followed by the Ministry’s departments in this regard.

The Ministry’s official spokesman, Dr. Bader Al-Enezi, said in a statement to KUNA that the remarks were made during Minister Al-Mutairi’s chair of the committee meeting, Saturday, in the presence of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information, Dr. Nasser Muhaisen, and the ministry’s senior leaders, where a special emergency plan has been setup and reviewed regarding monitoring developments in the region. Al-Enezi stressed that the Ministry is fully prepared to keep pace with events, take precautionary measures, provide all information to citizens and residents, and follow up on media coverage up to date with accuracy, professionalism and transparency. The spokesman added that media coverage is currently taking place through bulletins, news summaries, news tape, radio stations, and the ministry’s accounts on social media sites. Al-Enezi pointed out that the Ministry has taken all necessary measures and that it will not hesitate to deliver information with complete transparency and accuracy to the Kuwaiti public, calling on everyone to acquire information from its official sources. In related news, Kuwait Airways announced on Saturday that all airlines bound to Kuwait International Airport or departing from it would be diverted away from areas of tension, with flights scheduled according to their new routes. In a statement, Kuwait Airways said the new measure comes in response to the security situation in the region and out of concern for the safety of its passengers.

Al-Marri reassured parents of students and Kuwaiti citizens in Jordan that the embassy is in frequent communication with Jordanian authorities to stay updated on the latest developments regarding the airspace closure. Earlier, the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority (CARC) announced the temporary closure of Jordan’s airspace to all incoming, outgoing, and transit flights, effective from tonight for the next few hours.
