Indian Embassy organizes seminar on ‘Higher Education Landscape’

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 15: The Indian Embassy in Kuwait organized a seminar on ‘India’s Higher Education Landscape’ to showcase the advancements and prospects of the Indian higher education sector for potential collaboration between Kuwait and India. The chief guest was Lana Othman Al-Ayyar, CEO Al Rayan Holding Co. The guest of honour was Ms. Nourah Al Ghanim, Chairperson of the Union of Private Schools in Kuwait.

Speaking during the event the Ambassador of India to Kuwait, Dr AdarshSwaika; Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, Executive Director at QS World University Rankings and author of the book ‘India’s Knowledge Supremacy: The New Dawn’ and Dr. Ramakrishna Raman, Vice Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, Pune, shed light on several key aspects of India’s higher education sector.

The New Education Policy 2020 has been pivotal in driving significant transformations within India’s educational landscape. India is rapidly emerging as a global education hub, with the sector’s value expected to skyrocket from USD 117 billion to USD 313 billion by FY30. With an expansive network comprising 45,000 degree colleges, over 1000 universities, and approximately 1500 premier institutes, India boasts one of the world’s largest higher education systems. India’s prowess in the field of Ed-Tech is evident, with seven out of 36 Ed-Tech unicorns being Indian, collectively valued at USD 34.05 billion as of June 2022. The education sector in India has been open to 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) through an automatic route, with a significant influx of USD 9.3 billion between April 2000 and September 2023.

Moreover, India stands out in the QS Asia list with the highest number of universities (148) among all Asian countries and boasts 45 universities in the QS World ranking. The Indian government has set an ambitious target of achieving a Gross Enrollment Ratio of 50% by 2035. India also hosts a quarter of the global school population, reflecting its significant educational footprint on the world stage at a time when Indian universities are expanding their reach globally, with notable examples including the establishment of campuses abroad by prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (in Abu Dhabi and Tanzania), Birla Institute of Technology (in Pilani), and Amity University (in Dubai), among others.

Moreover, India is a frontrunner in patent filing and the publication of research papers in international journals. Indian Universities are successfully setting up campuses abroad including premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (Abu Dhabi and Tanzania); Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani and Amity University (Dubai); Sharda and Sambroom Universities (Uzbekistan), etc.

Foreign Universities like Deakin University setting up IBC at GIFT city, Gujarat India is one of the leading countries in patent filing and publication of research papers in international journals The seminar was useful in projecting opportunities for greater collaboration between the two countries in the educational sector, including setting up campuses of Indian Universities in Kuwait, enrollment of Kuwaiti students in Indian Universities, enrollment of Indian students in Kuwaiti Universities, recruitment of faculty-members and exchange programs between Universities of both countries. The event was attended by around 350 people, including representatives of Kuwait University, Kuwait College of Science and Technology, AUM, faculty members of other Universities in Kuwait, Principals of Indian and International schools, prominent members of the Indian community, teachers, students, and friends from media.
