MPs renew confidence in Defense

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 26: Minister of Defense Sheikh Hamad Jaber Al-Ali has survived the no-confidence motion, with 23 MPs voting against the motion while 18 voting in favor during the National Assembly session on Wednesday. His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah addressed a cable of congratulations to Sheikh Hamad for surviving the no-confidence vote in parliament. His Highness the Amir, in the cable, lauded the minister for his convincing replies to MPs’ queries during the parliamentary grilling session, also praising the high-level democratic practice on part of the MPs during the session, held on January 18.

A cable was also addressed to the minister by His Highness the Deputy Amir and Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah, congratulating him on winning the legislators’ confidence. On Jan 18, a total of 10 MPs signed the motion after the Assembly deliberated on the grilling request that MP Hamdan Al- Azmi filed against the minister. MPs Hamdan Al-Azmi and Shuaib Al- Muwaizri delivered speeches in favor of the grilling motion, while MPs Abdullah Al- Turaiji and Khalid Al-Anzi supported the minister.

After the voting on the noconfidence motion, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ali affirmed his respect for the Constitution and the right of MPs to file grilling motions. He praised the role of all MPs regardless of their position on the no-confidence motion, asserting this is part of their constitutional tools. He emphasized that he will never be a protector or defender of the corrupt, confirming he will always support reform efforts aimed at rectifying mistakes and addressing shortcomings. He vowed to fully cooperate with the Assembly in line with the Constitution. He pointed out that the legislative authority’s renewal of confidence in him inspired him to be more responsible, as well as strengthened his resolve to combat corruption and move towards the reform path.
