RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 11, (KUNA): Kuwait’s Ahmad Al-Mutairi came first in the men’s 100 m race at the Rio 2016 Paralympics on Saturday, Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah announced.

With this win in the competitions that started on Thursday, Al-Mutairi, from Kuwait Disabled Sport Club (KDSC), has brought honor to Kuwait, the minister told KUNA.

Sheikh Salman congratulated His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on the gold medal secured by Al-Mutairi.

“I congratulate His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Crown Prince, His Highness the Prime Minister, the Honorary President of KDSC Kheikha Sheikha Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah, and KDSC President Shafi Al-Hajeri, as well as all members of the Kuwaiti delegation to the Paralympic games,” Sheikh Salman said.

Beside Ahmad Naqa Al-Mutairi, the Kuwaiti squad to the event includes Mohammad Al-Odwani, Nasser Saleh, Mohammad Mejbel, Abdullah Al-Saif and Atef Al-Dousary.

The Paralympic Games are being held at Maracana Stadium from Sept 7-18.

Meanwhile, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Sunday sent a cable of congratulations to Al-Mutairi for winning the gold medal.

In the cable, His Highness the Amir lauded Al-Mutairi’s victory which reiterates that Kuwaiti youth, especially people with special needs, have the abilities to overcome all hardships and realize such historical achievements for Kuwaiti sports.

His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah sent similar congratulatory cables to Al-Mutairi.

National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim also addressed a cable to Al-Mutairi for winning the gold medal.

The Parliament Speaker hailed the athlete for his achievement for national sports and lauded the national champions who “continue to place the name of Kuwait aloft at international sports events.”

Kuwait Disabled Sports Club (KDSC) on Sunday dedicated the Rio Paralympic gold medal won by its athlete Ahmad Al-Mutairi to the Kuwaiti leadership and people.

Al-Mutairi’s victory in the 100-meter wheelchair race “would not have been possible if not for the immense support of Kuwaiti sports officials,” President of the KDSC Shafi Al-Hajeri told KUNA.

Moreover, the KDSC President noted that Al-Mutari has set an Olympic record with a finish time of 16 seconds, as he continued to stockpile victories in his impressive career.

Meanwhile, KDSC official Anwar Al-Mutawa underscored the enormity of this victory, which has placed Kuwait in the upper echelons of the ongoing Rio Paralympics. “Support by the country’s leadership has had a tremendous impact on our athletes,” he added.

Al-Mutawa also vowed that KDSC will continue to work diligently to bring Kuwait to the forefront of the international sporting arena.

A total of six Kuwaiti athletes are contesting the Rio Paralympics, which kicked off last Wednesday.

Kuwaiti Ambassador to Brazil Ayada Al-Saidi emphasized that Kuwaiti Minister of Information and Minister of State for Sports Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah’s visit to Brazil has given greater incentive for the two countries to cooperate in the fields of sports and culture.

Al-Saidi told KUNA, on Sunday that Sheikh Salman Al-Humoud left Brazil after he had held a number of meetings with Brazilian officials, most importantly with the Minister of Justice and Citizenship Alexandre de Moraes, who is also head of the disabled sports federation in the South American country.

On Kuwait-Brazil relations, the envoy pointed out that the two countries enjoy good ties and are always striving to boost them at all levels: politics, economy, culture and sports.

He added that the trade volume exchange between Kuwait and Brazil has exceeded $1.2 billion, encouraging the Kuwaiti Government to learn from the Brazilian experience in food security and renewable energy.

Al-Saidi also noted that Kuwait and Brazil will activate in the foreseeable future a cultural treaty that has been in effect since 2010; another treaty in sports will be actualized soon as well.
