KUWAIT CITY, Nov 9: The Ministry of Social Affairs has terminated the contracts of 10 Kuwaitis and eight expatriates working in traditional cafés, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting official sources.

Sources affirmed this step was taken in compliance with the decision of the director of the Social Fund for Traditional Cafés Department that such cafés no longer need these workers. Sources said the terminated workers occupied supervisory posts and they were given a three-month notice period ending in January.

Meanwhile, the terminated Kuwaitis revealed they did not expect this decision; considering they have been committed to their work and that they have been working as security and café supervisors under the bonus item. They asked Minister of Social Affairs and Minister of State for Economic Development Maryam Al-Aqeel to reconsider this decision and reinstate them to their positions.

In another development, the Ministry of Information recently formed a committee tasked to monitor the performance of various electronic, audio, visual and print media outlets during the upcoming parliamentary elections, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting a reliable source. The source disclosed to the daily that the committee is headed by Undersecretary of the ministry Munira Al- Huwaidi; while the members include the directors of different departments in the ministry and representatives of four government agencies – ministries of Interior, Transportation and Municipality and the Public Authority for Communications and Information Technology.
