Olympic, football bodies dissolved – ‘Financial irregularities’

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 25, (Agencies): The Public Authority for Sports (PAS) has decided to dissolve the Kuwait Football Association and the Kuwaiti Olympic Committee, assigning two interim commissions — alluding the measure to financial irregularities.

The assigned temporary commissions will take all necessary measures to effect the decisions, he said. Flaiteh added that according to the decisions, the two interim commissions will represent the State of Kuwait at the local and external sports levels. Moreover, they will take all necessary action to tackle all irregularties done by the two dismissed boards.

The two commissions are also entitled to take legal procedures against the illegal activities in a manner that will safeguard public funds. The decision forced Kuwaiti athletes in this month’s Oympic Games in Rio de Janeiro to compete under the Olympic flag. The country’s General Commission for Sports announced it had named a new head and deputy head for both organisations. Sheikh Fahd Jaber Al-Ali has been named as the new head of the Olympic committee, replacing Sheikh Talal Fahad Al-Sabah. Fawaz Al-Hassawi has been chosen to lead the football association.

In June, Kuwait’s Parliament agreed sweeping amendments that gave the government the right to dissolve the Olympic committee and local federations.
