TEXAS, Oct 23, (Agencies): A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Texas as a young life was cut short immediately after crossing the finish line in a cross country race earlier this month. Angel Hernandez, a sophomore at Chisholm Trail High School in Fort Worth, had just achieved a personal best time during a 5K race at a district track meet on October 13 when tragedy struck.

After a remarkable performance, Hernandez suddenly collapsed, leaving the event shrouded in sadness and disbelief. Concerned friends rushed to his aid, guiding him to a nearby water station, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where, sadly, he passed away about an hour later.

The cause of Hernandez’s collapse and subsequent death remains a mystery, and an investigation is underway by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

In a poignant tribute, just a week after his untimely passing, Hernandez was named Athlete of the Week at his high school, a testament to the impact he had on those around him. Coach Joseph Gifford, who had the privilege of working with the young athlete, praised his hard work and described him as an incredible teammate. Gifford expressed the team’s profound sorrow, saying, “We lost Angel at the District XC Meet, and words cannot express our feelings for him and his family. Thank you, Angel, for all your hard work and determination. You will be extremely missed.”

To honor Hernandez’s memory, a funeral was held, and the Chisholm Trail High School community paid tribute to him with a moment of silence at its annual homecoming football game.

Speaking of her friend, CTHS senior Madison Meers remembered Hernandez fondly, saying he had a remarkable ability to bring smiles even during challenging times. She noted, “He always put a smile on my face even when I was down and always knew how to brighten someone’s day.” Meers added, “He loved to run and make everyone’s day. He died doing what he loved, and we all hope he is safe and happy.”
