Repatriation of Indian residence violators – Supreme court of India asks petitioner to move representation before the Government

NEW DELHI, May 15: The Supreme court of India instructed the Counsel to make appropriate representation before the Government of India in a plea seeking repatriation of Indian citizens and migrant workers languishing in amnesty shelters of residence violators in Kuwait.

A bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and BR Gavai were hearing a petition filed by 4 Indians who are residence violators in Kuwait and were granted amnesty by Kuwait. However due to coronavirus lockdown imposed they are unable to return back to India.

Advocate Jose Abraham representative of the petitioner pointed out that the residence violators have been languishing in amnesty shelters in Kuwait, even though representation had been earlier made.

The plea to the Indian Supreme court has highlighted large number of Indians are placed in amnesty shelters and can contact the virus. The plea to concerned authorities for facilitating flights offered by the Kuwait Govt to land in India and receive all residence violators who are currently at the amnesty shelters.

The Supreme Court of India has been hearing numerous pleas for repatriation and evacuation of stranded Indians since the lock down was imposed in India and international travel bans were enforced.

The Govt of India issued Standard operating protocols on May 6 for evacuation of Indian citizens stranded abroad amit the pandemic termed as “Vande Bharat Mission” to which the evacuation has been started at the behest of the Indian Government. As on date, various stranded Indians from various countries have been brought back.

In Kuwait, the Ministry of health has been conducting daily checks and taking utmost health precautions at the amnesty shelters under the directives of WHO.
