NEW YORK, Nov 14, (Agencies): Residents of New York City recently found themselves in the midst of an unexpected sci-fi experience. On Nov 2, a local resident observed vibrant green liquid oozing from sewer grates near the World Trade Center. Dan Pantelo captured the surreal scene and shared it on X (formerly Twitter), featuring a photo of the luminous green substance surrounding a sewer grate and flowing into the city streets.

In his post, Pantelo expressed his amazement, stating, “So there’s literal green sludge bubbling up from the ground next to World Trade Center right now.” Seeking answers, he reached out to other X users, asking if anyone could explain the unusual occurrence and humorously musing, “Can anybody explain this or are we just living in full-blown Gotham rn.”

The peculiar green hue, it turns out, was a result of dye. A disclaimer was later added to Pantelo’s initial post, clarifying, “This is water full of green dye. Plumbers frequently use harmless, fluorescent green dye to detect leaks in plumbing and sewage systems.”

Dye tracing, a standard practice outlined by the National Park Service, involves using harmless dye to track the movement of water. The technique aids scientists in visualizing water flow from one location to another.

Returning to the scene the next day, Pantelo provided an update, noting, “UPDATE: it’s still there, people are walking through it casually, sometimes a small crowd gathers around and stares at it.” Despite the clarification about the harmless nature of the green liquid, Pantelo playfully shared his skepticism, suggesting, “Contrary to the community note, I think the sludge is radioactive ooze. Source? Divine intuition.”

While some X users were taken aback by the green dye, it’s not the first instance of dye tracing in NYC. Another user shared an image of green liquid in a subway station in Brooklyn, indicating that such occurrences are not entirely unprecedented in the city.
