KUWAIT CITY, Sept 2: In an attempt to subside public disappointment toward the parliamentary slackness in tackling the decision concerning fuel price increase, MP Faisal Al-Shaya has requested that free fuel cards given to ministers, MPs, members of the Municipal Council and officials in the State agencies, its institutions and subsidiaries must be stopped. He stressed that fuel cards should be limited to occupations that require movement, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

At the same time, he called on the government to present alternatives to compensate citizens for the difference caused by fuel price increase in a nonmanipulative manner. In a statement, MP Al-Shaya explained it will be fair to suspend free fuel coupons issued for the officials in government and other state institutions following implementation of the new fuel prices, saying he believes the proposal will not face any opposition from the MPs and State officials in order to promote equality among members of the society.

He explained the reduction of subsidy that resulted in the increase of fuel price was part of other important steps taken by government to fight against financial corruption in some of the government’s agencies, while enforcing law on violators in the ministries to stop financial wastage in all forms, besides exerting tough financial control to hold to account all individuals behind public funds wastage, as per information released by the State Audit Bureau.

The MP seeks for government to take serious measures to diversify State income, affirming that amendment to the clause concerning subsidies in the general budget should be done in parallel with the development of public services, and economy infrastructure, support of youths small and medium enterprises, creating environment conducive for commercial activities for the youth, while ending bureaucracy in government to encourage foreign investments in Kuwait.

In his role, MP AbdulRahman Al-Jeran called on the Minister of Trade and Industry Yusuf Al-Ali to go to the market accompanied by Kuwait Television Channel in order to get the proper picture of what families go through when they buy school requirements, as well as supplies for Eid al-Adha.

Dr Al-Jeran asked the minister to carry KD 250 in his pocket for shopping i.e. after filling the fuel tank of his car, and then shop for the school requirements— as stipulated by Ministry of Education— with necessary items for Eid celebration, just like some Kuwait family of five members do. He pointed out that live experiment will give the minister the chance to realize seriousness of the matter.
