At Bondi Westfield, a man, Joel Cauchi, 40, stabbed numerous women before being shot dead by police.

SYDNEY, Australia, April 15: In a shocking incident at Bondi Westfield, a man identified as Joel Cauchi, 40, went on a stabbing spree, primarily targeting women, before being fatally shot by a responding officer. The rampage left at least 14 people injured, with five of the six fatalities being women.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb addressed the media, highlighting the apparent focus of the attacker on women. “It’s obvious to me, it’s obvious to detectives that seems to be an area of interest that the offender focused on women and avoided the men,” she stated during an interview with ABC News Breakfast.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities are intensifying efforts to understand the perpetrator’s mindset. Commissioner Webb emphasized the importance of interviews with individuals close to Cauchi to gain insight into his possible motivations.

Previously, authorities had indicated a connection between the attack and Cauchi’s mental health issues. Despite being known to the police, he had never been arrested or charged in his home state of Queensland. Queensland police revealed that Cauchi had been diagnosed with an unconfirmed mental illness at the age of 17 and had led a transient lifestyle for several years.

The devastating incident has left the community in shock and prompted discussions about mental health awareness and support systems. As investigations continue, authorities are committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
