KUWAIT CITY, April 2 : With the beginning of spring and spread of pollen in the air, people with seasonal allergies usually start to take the necessary precautions, but this year, spring coincides with the emergence of novel coronavirus (Covid-19), making some people afraid of coming down with a common cold due to the fact that some symptoms are similar for coronavirus and seasonal allergies, reports Al-Rai daily.

Dr Al-Shomer

In a statement to the daily, former head of the AIDS, Statistics and Information Office in the Ministry of Health and member of Kuwait Cardiac Society Dr Hind Al- Shomer pointed out that the advent of spring signals the beginning of the allergy season.

This is in addition to changes in weather conditions. Patients with allergies, especially respiratory allergies and asthma, should strictly follow medical guidelines and precautions; such as avoiding being exposed to humid areas and taking their medication regularly, she explained.

She also advised them to avoid allergic irritants – whether food, smell or atmosphere such as moisture and fog; as well as closed and crowded places, and fumes.

Regarding the symptoms of the common cold, Al-Shomer said these symptoms may include cough, headache and high temperature, which are similar to that of coronavirus.

She clarified the coronavirus symptoms include general fatigue, shortness of breath and muscle pain; indicating general fatigue is associated with travel or coming into contact with a person who has been confirmed to be sick. She concluded: “If the doctor suspects a particular case, he examines the medical history and conducts the test for coronavirus in order to confirm the term of infection.”
