Review of vaccine’s effectiveness and safety

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 13: As the Ministry of Health prepares to license the emergency use of the “AstraZeneca – Oxford” vaccine, health sources revealed that specialized technical committees in the ministry continue to review the results of studies on the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine, and verify the quality reports and the level of manufacturing, reports Al-Rai daily.
The sources said, “The date of arrival of the first batch of the vaccine has not yet been determined. It will not arrive only after the issuance of the emergency use license, based on the established procedures.”
They revealed the imminent opening and operation of Hall No. 6 in the vaccination center within the exhibition grounds, and the ongoing work to equip the two vaccination centers in Jahra and Ahmadi governorates, indicating that licenses will be issued for these centers to become operational in full capacity.
The sources highlighted some challenges that face various countries of the world, including those where vaccine manufacturers are located, in providing the required quantities, which would be subject to fair and equitable distribution restrictions, adding that, “The increasing frequency of vaccination in some countries is due to issuance of the green light to use.”
However, the specialized technical committees in Kuwait’s Ministry of Health prefers to exercise caution in permitting their licensing or use due to the presence of some deficiencies in the data on the effectiveness and safety of this type of vaccines.
The sources stressed that, “The safety of vaccines are the first and main criterion for use. The ministry is proceeding in a balanced manner in this regard and will not be subject to under any pressure to license any vaccines that do not meet the requirements and data.”
They emphasized that Kuwait is committed to the recommended period between the two doses of the Pfizer – Biontech vaccine (which is 21 days) based on the recommendations issued in this regard, unlike some countries that prefer to wait for a longer period in order to work on giving the first dose to more people.
The sources affirmed that mobile units will be allocated for vaccinating the disabled elderly in their homes during the next few years, after completing the readiness of some special arrangements in this regard.”
