KUWAIT CITY, Dec 11: Chairperson of the Board of Directors and the Director General of the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition (PAFN) Reem Al- Fulaij sent an official letter to the acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs Musallam Al-Subaie in which she called for canceling the commercial activity of selling live poultry from the commercial activities of the branches investing in cooperative societies, reports Aljarida daily.

According to sources affiliated to the Ministry of Social Affairs, PAFN demanded that the ministry be satisfied with licensing the sale of frozen chicken only in order to preserve public health and the safety of consumers, especially in light of the report submitted by the Director of the Slaughterhouses Department and the Deputy Director General for Inspection and Control Affairs at PAFN, in which he highlighted the health risks resulting from the continuation of the activity of selling live poultry. It was also based on the opinion recently issued by PAFN’s Legal Affairs Department in support of the need to cancel this activity.

The sources affirmed that the ministry, represented by the Department of Cooperative Society Development in the cooperative sector, is currently studying the request from all angles, before submitting it to PAFN, especially from a legal point of view so that it is not subject to judicial appeals. They said the matter is not only limited to the ministry, but there are other government agencies directly related to it, such as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Kuwait Municipality, especially since it is related to branches invested by others that fall outside the scope of work of central markets or cooperative branches
