KUWAIT CITY, May 31: Oil expert Kamel Al-Harami disclosed that power plants consume around 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, and this rate increases annually, thereby depleting the country’s primary source of wealth.
In a statement to the newspaper, Al-Harami stressed the need to adopt and implement a fair consumption tier system, especially since the cost of a kilowatt for the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is estimated at 10 fils, while it is sold for only two fils to private residential customers. He pointed out that implementing the tier system will reduce the State’s burden of building power plants and consuming oil to operate power plants, which require huge budgets. He emphasized that forming a government committee to review electricity tariffs and adopt a tier system at this particular time, when the country is facing an electricity crisis, is a step in the right direction.
“Therefore, the recommendations and results of this committee must be implemented by preparing and approving a draft law on this matter,” he suggested. He explained that consumption patterns in Kuwait are illogical as long as electricity tariffs are low and subsidized for all segments of society. “It is unreasonable to treat people with limited income, those who own one home, and those who own multiple homes equally,” he asserted.
