‘Marzouq did not fall down’

We have read, and still continue to read the old saying that ‘Marzouq fell on the ground’, and it was said by some to confuse a person named Marzouq, and their expectation that he would fall on the ground inevitably, and often Marzouq fell, when someone repeated this saying in front of him.

This is a story of heritage, but currently, the expectations of those who wanted Marzouq Al-Ghanim, the Speaker of the National Assembly to fall, have seen how their hopes vanished in thin air when Marzouq boldly faced the extremists and their accusations and obscenites to serve the homeland.

There is no personal relation between me and Mr Marzouq Al-Ghanem except a phone call that took place six or seven months ago, which lasted only a few seconds on a special occasion. I do not think that I will meet him soon as I am not in the world of politics, but at the same time, as a writer and an observer, I am obliged to write about it.

Despite the relative young age of Mr Marzouq compared to the ages of his predecessors in assuming the position of Speaker of the National Assembly, the second man in our political system, he demonstrated his ability to conduct the sessions, supported by sufficient knowledge of the articles of the Constitution and the Assembly’s internal regulations and he has a clear regional presence, with a capable personality to control the loudest voices and the thuggery of some, whom the late Ahmed Al-Rubei once described as a mob of dictators fueled by emotion and its enemy is reason.

Our government is not a government of angels and its mistakes cannot be denied but what happened in the past does not mean that it will be repeated in the present, there is a new spirit, and its president must be given the opportunity so that we do not fall into the void and lose everything.

The alternative to the current situation in the current circumstances is total chaos. The so-called majority is the same one that harmed us for half a century with so much backwardness and freedom-stifling laws just because they are the majority does not mean that they are always right.

I repeat and repeat and will repeat that I am not with Marzouq Al-Ghanim in everything, nor among those who cheer for Sabah Al-Khaled but I hate the alternative, and I am terrified of the demands of the majority, and I have learned from history that whoever does not read it well will often be burnt by the fire of his ignorance.

Finally, I would like to assure the colleague and the deputy chosen by the Muslim Brotherhood to represent them in the National Assembly, and who attacked Al-Qabas more than once and wrote about it, until the door was shut in his face and now he can write in another newspaper.

Neither Al-Qabas administration nor Mr Marzouq Al-Ghanim or anybody else asked me or inspired me to write this article, and Marzouq may not need to know or hear my opinion, but I wrote it because I am reassured about my decision, not only out of respect for him but also for the severity of my disagreement with his opponents who shamefully resorted to demean him – the people who lack good morals that they claim to possess in their disagreement with him.

It is no wonder because they were, and still are the most extreme in their political opinions, sectarian orientations and their bloody history. Consequently, I will not replace them with Marzouq Al-Ghanim, and even if they are gathered together, Marzouq stood firm as a rock.
