Legislator queries Kuwaitis bank loans

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 17: MP Faisal Al-Kandari has forwarded queries to Minister of Finance Abdulwahab Al-Rashead about the loans that citizens obtained from local banks. He wants to know the total amount of such loans, number of debtors and loan amount obtained in each bank, number of those who pay their installments on time and those who do not pay on time, number of those registered at the Family Fund, number of those facing lawsuits filed by banks and vice versa, powers granted to the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) to settle the complaints of debtors against the banks, number of complaints referred to the court as they are not covered by CBK’s authority, if banks have the legal right to seize properties as per the court rulings if the debtors do not pay their loans, rationale behind the plan of CBK to increase loan interest to 6.5 percent this year, economic advantage of this decision, number of bankrupt debtors registered at the Bankruptcy Fund, and total amount of unpaid loans.

MP Osama Al-Zaid asked Al-Rashead if Kuwait received the interest for Kuwait’s deposits in the Central Bank of Egypt amounting to $4 billion, if the interest is in the State treasury now, if Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) owns shares at Tri International Consulting Group (TICG), tasks of the Risks Unit at KIA, reason for signing contracts with foreign consulting firms, and difficulties in identifying potential risks that the Egyptian economy might face. He asked Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and State Minister for Integrity Promotion Abdulaziz Majed Al-Majed about the current number of Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti judges and public prosecutors, regulations governing the appointment of public prosecutors, number of public prosecutors appointed per year, and details of the plan to Kuwaitize the judiciary if any.

MP Hamdan Al-Azmi asked Minister of Education, Higher Education and Research Ahmed Abdulwahab Al-Adwani to provide him with copies of decisions on filling up vacant leadership positions and promotions from January 2022 till date, disciplinary action taken against erring officials at the Human Resources Unit in the Administrative Development Department at the Ministry of Education, and if the ministry has the right to approve the promotion and appointment decisions taken by officials subjected to disciplinary action. On the other hand, National Assembly Speaker Ahmed Al-Saadoun sent a cable to Chairman of the National Council of Bhutan and Assembly Speaker Wangchuk Namgyel on the occasion of their National Day.
