Ukraine covers an area of 306,000 km² and has a population of approximately 40 million. Russia, with an area of 17 million km² and a population of 143 million, is attempting to annex it. Russia is 28 times larger than Ukraine and has a population approximately 3.6 times greater. Iran, on the other hand, covers an area of 1.65 million km² and has a population of 93.2 million. The United States, with an area of 9.9 million km² - almost six times the size of Iran - and a population of 349 million, is attempting to subjugate it to its will. Taiwan covers an area of approximately 36,000 km² and has a population of 23 million. China seeks to annex it by force. China covers an area of approximately 10 million km² and has a population of more than 1.413 billion, making it about 265 times larger than Taiwan and approximately 61 times more populous. The three countries face huge challenges from their respective rivals.
Focusing on Taiwan, we find that it has successfully established itself as a formidable power, achieving near parity with its large and powerful neighbor in many respects.
Taiwan has reached this equilibrium through decades of logistical, human and military preparations. Perhaps its most significant strength lies in its vast arsenal of drones, unmanned attack craft and missiles, which are capable of countering an attack from various directions. Taiwan also possesses valuable intelligence on enemy troop positions and movements, as well as a formidable army capable of rapid deployment before any invading force can reach and occupy the island. Many military analysts believe that the Taiwanese army could repel an invading force with waves of drones, missiles and artillery, making any amphibious assault a highly risky undertaking.
Drawing on the lessons learned from Taiwan and the war in Ukraine, and recognizing the need to understand Iran’s strengths and weaknesses - a country that, since its revolution, has not hesitated to challenge us and undermine our security - Kuwait must acquire, manufacture, and train in the use of drones as quickly as possible, making this weapon the backbone of the Kuwaiti army.
We can learn from the experiences of Ukraine and Taiwan in developing, stockpiling and training in the use of these technologies to make any future aggression against us more difficult and costly. Some may consider this proposal fanciful, but nothing is impossible in today’s world, and even the most consequential decisions begin with a single step. We have no choice but to rely on ourselves, our own capabilities, and our own strength.
Over-reliance on others has become akin to a reckless gamble with uncertain outcomes. From the outset, we must consider the possibility that Iran could emerge from its war with the United States almost victorious, but severely wounded, psychologically, humanly, and materially. Such an outcome could only increase its appetite for targeting its neighbors and attempting to blackmail them. Therefore, we must be prepared to face such a scenario and deal with any potential danger.
