Kuwait fish prices soar, pomfret up by 2.8%, shrimp by 15.5%

Fish sales and prices in Kuwait fluctuate throughout 2023.

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 15: The Central Administration of Statistics has provided insightful data on fish sales and pricing trends in Kuwait throughout 2023, shedding light on significant fluctuations in the market.

During the first quarter of 2023, fish sales amounted to approximately 732.8 tons, valued at 1.64 billion dinars. However, these figures took a sharp decline in the second quarter, plummeting by 43.4 percent to 399.26 tons, with a value of 927.8 million dinars. The third quarter saw a notable recovery, witnessing fish sales rise to 866.7 tons, totaling a substantial value of 2.12 billion dinars.

Fsh prices in Kuwait experienced a noticeable uptick compared to the previous year. Notably, the price of a kilogram of silver pomfret (Zubaidi) increased by 2.8 percent, reaching 10.5 dinars by the end of the third quarter of 2023, compared to 10.2 dinars in the same period of 2022. Similarly, the price of shrimp surged by 15.5 percent, while sheri and subaiti prices rose by 19 percent and 21.6 percent, respectively.

Statistics compiled by Al-Rai highlighted substantial disparities between fish prices in Kuwait and those in other Gulf markets. For instance, the price of silver pomfret in Kuwait was found to be 2 percent higher than in Bahrain, 385 percent higher than in Qatar, and 161 percent higher than in Saudi Arabia. Similarly, shrimp prices in Kuwait surpassed those in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

A closer comparison revealed notable variations in the prices of other fish species as well. For instance, the price of a kilo of grouper in Kuwait stood at 4 dinars, considerably higher than in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Similarly, sha’ari prices in Kuwait were notably higher compared to Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

These statistics underscore the dynamic nature of the Kuwaiti fish market, influenced by various factors including supply, demand, and regional pricing dynamics.
