Prices lowest in the region

KUWAIT CITY, May 29: The parliamentary demand to grant every citizen KD 50 monthly as compensation for the rising petrol prices is unlikely to meet any form of compliance or approval from the government, say sources close to the government.

On the public demand to cancel the decision to increase petrol, electricity and water charges; sources disclosed the government stressed that petrol prices in Kuwait are the lowest in the region. Sources also clarified that the increase in electricity and water charges is in accordance with the law and implemented only on commercial properties, not private Kuwaiti residences.

Furthermore, in response to the interpellation motion submitted by MPs Riyadh Al-Adsani and Bader Al-Mulla against him, Minister of Finance Nayef Al-Hajraf pointed out this is a great opportunity to clearly inform the public about the efforts exerted in finding solutions to numerous issues; including those mentioned in the motion.

He asserted, “Our aim is to protect public funds and interests.” Moreover, prompted by the recent devastating traffic accident on Kabad Expressway which claimed the lives of eight individuals, MP Mohammed Hayef submitted queries to Minister of Public Works Jenaan Boshehri.

He asked if Kabad Expressway, Salmi Expressway, Seventh Ring Road and all the connecting roads meet international road safety standards. He also inquired about the technical specifications of these highways, if they are satisfactory in view of the current traffic movement and considering the high rate of accidents occurring on these highways.

He wants to know if the ministry keeps track of the number of traffic accidents throughout the country. If yes, he requested for a copy of the statistics.
