Immunize us as you have immunized yourself

AFTER a long wait during which there was lack of any indication of the ability of the executive authority to resolve and conclude matters in its favor, the government suddenly woke up from its floundering by issuing a series of firm decisions, the most important of which is related to immunizing His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled from political accountability.

This decision was taken despite the fact that the MPs submitted interpellations against His Highness the Prime Minister and the ministers. The lesson remains that this immunity, which has been given to the Cabinet, gives it the power to implement its projects and enact laws.

Today, all the considerations with which the government was building its positions have evaporated after it acquired immunity that keeps it away from a virus that nearly killed it, and robbed any future government of the ability to confront the parliament.

Therefore, the government no longer has any justification regarding its inability to meet the people in the middle of the road, and to be populist par excellence.

It is the government of Kuwait that serves its people, not the government of individuals, MPs, or influential people. It has become imperative to prove its worth so that it does not regress to disorder or lose its credibility in the eyes of the public before the parliament.

Postponing the interpellations until after the second term of the legislative session is an opportunity for His Highness the Prime Minister to highlight his well-known integrity, honesty, and the ability to assume responsibility.

Indeed, this type of person is considered to be of worth by Kuwaitis and is capable of assuming greater responsibilities.

The public is waiting to see what His Highness the Prime Minister and the Cabinet will present and to pull from the MPs the cards which they have been using to extort the state institutions from which they reaped their popularity while spending from the state’s pocket.

Kuwaiti officials often talk elaborately about issues of concern to people. They reassure that the country is fine, its finances and oil wealth is sufficient for the next fifty years, and there can be no deficit if there is responsible management of public money. From time to time, they also use the expired slogan –“diversifying sources of income” – even though no progress has yet been achieved.

In fact, the successive governments enacted decisions that increased the closure of the country, prevented investments, and even expelled investors. This happened when the matter was left to a handful of racist and exclusionary officials, who destroyed our culture, tore apart our society, and spread their toxins in the economy to weaken it.

Therefore, it has today become necessary to establish a higher council for the economy, which will operate based on a clear vision and a proper plan.

Regarding the openness for instance, Kuwait is not the only country in the region that has a large number of expatriates. There are countries where the percentage of citizens is only 12 percent but they continue to open up and benefit from expats as an added value. On the other hand, we have officials who issue decisions that harm the expatriates and tarnish our country’s reputation.

His Highness the Prime Minister must be well aware of the nature of the next phase, and will work to purify the laws that harm people and waste opportunities. There is a need for a legal revolution in every sense of the word. The opportunity is now available more than ever, even if it calls for some constitutional amendments.

The United States of America amended its constitution more than fifty times. France changed the face of its republic several times. In other countries, the constitution is regularly amended after every few years.

Finally, all we can say to His Highness the Prime Minister – You have immunized yourself … you should also immunize Kuwait.
