Five succumb to Western Equine Encephalitis virus in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, Jan 29, (Agencies): The Argentine Ministry of Health has confirmed the death of five people due to the Western Equine Encephalitis virus, with 39 recorded cases of infection across five provinces in the South American country.

The majority of cases were concentrated in the central region, with 38 out of 39 infections reported in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Cordoba. One case was identified in the Northern Province of Santiago del Estero.

All recorded cases required hospitalization, with an average age of 55. The oldest patient was 81 years old, and the youngest was nine months old.

The virus is primarily transmitted in rural areas through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most human cases either exhibit no symptoms or present mild symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle pain and general malaise.
