LOS ANGELES, Sept 26, (Agencies): In a recent interview, Emma Heming Willis, the wife of actor Bruce Willis, provided an update on her husband's ongoing battle with dementia. Speaking with Hoda Kotb for Today on September 25, Emma, aged 45, kicked off World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week by shedding light on the challenging journey they've been on since Bruce's diagnosis last year.
Frontotemporal dementia is a progressive neurological disorder that affects both cognition and behavior. Emma described it as a difficult path, emphasizing the importance of discussing the condition openly, particularly with their young daughters. She wanted to ensure there was no stigma or shame attached to their father's diagnosis or any form of dementia.
Calling Bruce's diagnosis both a blessing and a curse, Emma explained that understanding what was happening allowed her to come to terms with the situation. While it didn't lessen the pain, knowledge made it somewhat more bearable.
Despite the sadness surrounding Bruce's condition, Emma expressed her desire to find moments of joy within their family. She emphasized that dementia affects not only the person diagnosed but also their entire family, including their daughters, Mabel, and Evelyn, aged 11 and 9.
When asked if Bruce is aware of his condition, Emma became emotional, noting that it's challenging to ascertain. The couple shares a commitment to honesty and openness in their household, which includes adult daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, from Bruce's previous marriage to Demi Moore.
Emma stressed the importance of educating their family about the disease, believing that understanding it from a medical perspective helps everything make more sense. She highlighted the beauty in their lives and Bruce's desire for them to find joy amidst the grief and sadness.
Participating in this interview pushed Emma beyond her comfort zone, but she has been a vocal advocate through her social media presence in recent years. She admitted that putting her best foot forward is a daily struggle but emphasized its importance for her and her family's well-being. Emma emphasized that self-care is vital, as only by looking after themselves can they effectively care for their loved ones. She concluded by saying she's doing her best, as always.
