Breast reduction surgeries have witnessed a notable surge, as per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons report.

NEW YORK, Oct 9, (Agencies): Breast reduction surgeries have witnessed a notable surge, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), representing 92% of board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. The data reveals a remarkable 54% increase in cosmetic breast reduction procedures since 2019.

In 2019, ASPS member surgeons conducted 46,340 cosmetic breast reductions, a number that dipped to 33,574 in 2020 during the pandemic. However, by 2022, this figure rebounded to 71,364.

What’s Driving the Surge in Breast Reductions?

Post-Pandemic Lifestyle Changes: Dr. Gregory Greco, ASPS president and chair of plastic surgery at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey, attributes the overall increase in breast reductions to post-pandemic lifestyle shifts. The pandemic has led to a growing trend of “body contouring” as people’s bodies have undergone changes due to weight fluctuations during the pandemic.

Hindrance of Larger Breasts: Some individuals have experienced larger breast size as an unintended result of weight gain, which has prompted them to seek reduction surgeries. Others find their naturally larger breasts to be an impediment to engaging in active and fit lifestyles, such as playing sports.

Personal Comfort: There is a renewed emphasis on overall well-being, and some individuals opt for smaller breasts to enhance personal comfort, clothing choices, and freedom from the discomfort associated with large breasts, including back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Mental Health: Breast reduction surgery can have a transformative impact on individuals’ mental health, boosting self-confidence and body image. It is seen as a positive step toward improved mental well-being for many.

Social Media Influence: Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have played a role in raising awareness of surgery as a holistic solution to mental health concerns. Celebrities openly discussing their breast reduction surgeries have contributed to this trend.

Advancements in Technology: Technological advancements and surgical techniques have made breast reductions more accessible and attractive. These innovations have reduced downtime and minimized scarring for patients.

While the demand for breast reduction surgeries is on the rise, insurance coverage remains a significant obstacle. Insurance companies often classify breast reductions as cosmetic rather than reconstructive surgery, limiting coverage. Patients increasingly opt for cosmetic payment routes due to insurance limitations.

Insurance companies establish strict criteria for breast reduction surgeries to qualify as medically necessary and be eligible for coverage. These criteria often involve requirements such as documented physical therapy, chiropractic care, and multiple physician visits, which can be burdensome for patients and surgeons alike.

Despite the challenges related to insurance, breast reduction patients report high satisfaction and improved quality of life. Plastic surgeons prioritize both symptom relief and aesthetic outcomes, emphasizing the importance of individual well-being.

In conclusion, the surge in breast reduction surgeries reflects evolving societal attitudes toward body image, well-being, and mental health, with individuals increasingly prioritizing their comfort and self-confidence. While insurance coverage may present challenges, the positive impact on patients’ lives makes the procedures highly sought-after.
