GTD seeks to toughen penalties, fines on traffic rules, regulations violators

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 25: The General Traffic Department has submitted a proposal to the Fatwa and Legislation Department to toughen the penalties and fines on violators of traffic laws, reports Al-Anba daily.

However, the GTD source said there is nothing new in the proposal since the penalties and fines were in force for decades but added these are no longer deterrent and the only way out of the situation is to toughen the penalties on traffic violations.

The source refused to divulge the details of the proposal or enumerate the penalties and fines, but asserted the penalties and fines are no longer deterrent and this reflects in the number of road accidents and casualties.

The source pointed out that the next step after the Fatwa and Legislation studies the proposals is to refer the issue to the National Assembly for approval.

The source pointed out tough penalties will reduce traffic violations and as a result the accidents, deaths and injuries because most accidents happen due to non-compliance with traffic laws.

On the other hand, the source affirmed the traffic sector continues to run a check on driving licenses that were issued over the past five years to ensure the applicants have fulfilled all terms and conditions contained in the ministerial order.
