Egyptian novelist Ala’a Al-Aswany says, barbarism means to act freely without restrictions, rules or laws, far from civilization. As for civility, it is represented in owning or achieving tangible civil achievements such as buildings, bridges, cars, luxuries, and others, but civilization is the civilized behavior of the world governed by a moral system.

If there was an island where only barbaric people lived, they would never have contact with others, and a rare substance would have been discovered on it and exploited by a foreign company, then the lives of these people would change, and they would have all the tools of civilization such as machines, vehicles, homes, and so on, but they would remain barbarians for the means of the new civilization would not change their behavior sans civilization.

Barbarism has several manifestations, including belief in collective punishment. The sect or tribe from which an individual commits a crime will be punished for his crime. One of the manifestations of barbarism is that the happiness of its members lies in the senses.

Neither music, nor reading, nor striving for good, nor accomplishing a project mean anything to the savage persons, as all that he wants and thinks about is to eat and have sex and almost nothing else.
Another manifestation of barbaric attitude towards women is that she is just a toy for enjoyment, serving, cooking, and a factory for the production of children with complete contempt for her.
The fourth manifestation of barbarism lies in the control of emotion over the mind. The leader who loses a dangerous battle as a result of his negligence, and comes and weeps in front of the masses, the masses will forgive him all his sins.

The fifth manifestation is coexistence with noise and a tendency to violence. Noise does not mean anything to the barbarian and he may sometimes miss it. He also tends to violence, belief in deterrent punishment, and cutting the criminal off piece by piece, and this is a kind of disorder in behavior that is inconsistent with civilization.
The sixth manifestation lies in the fact that the truth has one face. The barbarian learns that everything the boss or father says is true. Everyone who disagrees will be punished. The group’s belief is correct, their clothes are the most appropriate, and their food is the best, so there is no other truth.

As for the last manifestation of barbarism, according to Al-Aswany’s point of view, it lies in the strong tendency to use the law instead of applying the law, that is, to look at the perpetrator of the crime and use the law with him. If he is from us, then the law does not apply to him, and if he is simple and servile, then the text applies to him.

Of course, there are many other manifestations of barbarism, the scope of which is not enough to enumerate them, but the doctor and thinker Dr. Khaled Montaser sees a funny and painful aspect of underdevelopment, which is represented in the passion that simple people show when a person, especially a woman, converts from one religion to another, where celebrations are held as if Rome had opened doors without regard to the pain on the other side there is a negative impact.

And if we look at the other side, we will find large numbers of famous people, scientists, inventors, writers and great artists converting from Christianity, for example, to Buddhism, and yet Christian governments do not care about these people leaving their religion, and the Buddhist government does not care about such conversions, so there is no crying on the part of the former and no celebration on the part of the latter, life goes on as if nothing has happened.
