Amir pardons some sentenced Kuwaitis

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 21: His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al- Jaber Al-Sabah on Monday issued a decree granting special amnesty for a number of sentenced citizens. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Barrak Al-Shoitan stated, “According to the order by His Highness the amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and in completion of the file of amnesty for the Kuwaiti citizens and in line with the provision 75 of the constitution, His Highness (the Amir) issued today decree 2018/2022 regarding the special pardon halting the imprisonment sentence for a number of Kuwaiti nationals.”

Minister Al-Shoitan said in a statement to KUNA following the cabinet weekly session that article 1 of the decree stipulated special pardon with respect of the freedom restraining penalty that had been ruled for a number of Kuwaiti citizens for crimes commited between 16-11-2011 and 31-12-2021. The second provision of the decree said a special panel would supervise implementation of the decree first provision and prepare lists of the entitled prisoners who will be freed immediately. The commission will be chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and will include the public prosecutor and the interior undersecretary. It will hold a meeting on Thursday to begin its works, the minister concluded.

The Cabinet held its weekly session at Seif Palace under chairmanship of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Monday. Following the session, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for cabinet Affairs Barrak Al-Shaitan said that the session kicked off with a briefing by Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs regarding attendance of the Representative of His Highness the Amir, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the accompanying delegation of the inauguration ceremony of the World Cup (FIFA 2022) in Qatar.

The information minister underlined the splendid and dazzling ceremony that marked start of the games, reflecting the country’s culture, values and its respect for the others. He also lauded the inaugural address by the Qatari Amir Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al-Thani, namely his call for tolerance, amity and peace. The Cabinet expressed congratulations to Qatar on the ceremonial inauguration that manifested Doha’s ability to send a message of amity and peace to all nations of the globe, commending its huge preparations and the intensive efforts by the relevant apparatuses to ensure the tournament success.

The ministers addressed various local issues advising the relevant departments to work out the strategy for warehousing, examined the project of Abdulrazzak tunnel and the existing hurdles, decided to increase financial allowances for Kuwaiti students studying abroad by 50 percent effective start of the upcoming fiscal year as of April 1, 2023. The ministers approved appointment as board members at the National Bank of Kuwait: Abdulwahab Al-Haroun, Fatma Al-Badr, Hanaa Rzougi and Mirza Hassan. He relevant decree was submitted to His Highness the Amir.

The ministers during the session examined some requests by a number of MPs. Then, the information minister eulogized the demised former information minister Mohammad Al-Sanousi. They also discussed various Arab and international issues, decried Iranian attacks on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, expressed solidarity with Iraq and rejection of such attacks and expressed solace to the victims. Moreover, the ministers applauded renewal of the grain exportation agreement from Ukrainian ports for four months more.

The Kuwait cabinet also decided in its meeting to assign the Ministry of Higher Education to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to increase the allocations for students on scholarships to study abroad by 50 percent, in the beginning of the next fiscal year, April 1, 2023. The decision was made on the directives of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf AlAhmad Al-Sabah regarding the importance of providing all kinds of support to students on scholarships and creating an appropriate living environment for them, the cabinet stated on its official account on twitter.(KUNA)
