Action urged on social media abuse

AMMAN, Jan 29: Jordanian Minister of Government Communication Faisal Shboul on Saturday called for a collective Arab action to deal with the threats imposed by the misuse of social media on Arab societies. “It is no longer a secret the enormous challenges facing societies around the world and Arab societies in particular, as a result of the information revolution and its abuse,” the Jordanian minister said at the inaugural session of the Arab Media Forum.

The four-day event is organized in Amman in collaboration of with the Arab League Media and Communication Sector and the Arab Satellite Broadcasting Organization. Shboul called for the formation of an Arab negotiating team to agree with international media outlets on rules to help preserve Arab societies and protect media outlets. He warned that some people use social media to spread hate speech and fake news as well as breaching people privacy.

For his part, Assistant Arab League Secretary- General and Head of the Arab League Media and Communication Sector Ambassador Ahmad Khattabi said that the League is looking forward to making this forum a platform for dialogue between all partners, including governments, councils, professional associations, civil society and experts, to develop and boost Arab media cooperation (KUNA)
