Tsunami advisory in effect for US West Coast following Tonga undersea volcanic eruption

WASHINGTON, Jan 15: A tsunami advisory is in effect Saturday for the US West Coast in the wake of an undersea volcanic eruption near the Pacific nation of Tonga. According to the National Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami advisory is in effect for Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) tweeted “a tsunami is currently being observed by all Islands’ Emergency Management.” “We are relieved that there is no reported damage and only minor flooding through-out the islands,” it added. It said in a separate tweet that “a massive volcanic eruption has occurred on Tonga Island of Tonga. This event is extremely dangerous for those on and near the area closest to the eruption. A tsunami has been generated that we are closely monitoring as it crosses the Pacific.” (KUNA)
