Strict measures taken to protect country – Fundraisers under microscope

KUWAIT CITY, July 14: The Council of Ministers, at its next meeting will discuss extensive mechanisms to control charity work and will call on the concerned parties to redouble their efforts to prevent any manipulation and put charity and voluntary work under the spotlight to prevent suspicious acts, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting reliable sources.

The same sources said the Council will examine a detailed report compiled by the Interior Ministry on members of the cell who were arrested by the Kuwaiti authorities at the request of Egyptian Interpol.

The sources pointed out that the government is currently looking at this security file and charity work from more than axis angle to control the situation and protect Kuwait from the activities of sleeper cells or suspicious elements to preempt criminal activities and arrest suspicious elements of put behind bars the accused if it is found they are involved in cases affecting the security of the country, irrespective who they are – from fraternal or friendly countries.

As for the government outlook towards some charities after the arrest of the cell members, the sources pointed to concerted efforts to cleanse charity work and to distance it from being politicized, in coordination with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor to develop controls on the transfer of funds to suspicious bodies.

The sources added there is a move by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to follow up the process of providing assistance to some countries. The sources put emphasis on charities saying fundraisers and charity workers will be put under the microscope in terms of residence permit and if anyone found violating the labor law will be referred to the concerned authorities immediately and necessary action will be taken.

The sources ruled out that the government will brand one of the currents in the country as a terrorist group based on some international recommendations, pointing out everyone is subject to the laws unless it is proven they have committed a criminal act.

On the other hand, the Egyptian diplomatic sources confirmed to the Al-Qabas that there is coordination and efforts are underway between the authorities of the two brotherly countries to hand over those arrested – members of the Muslim Brotherhood cell – to Cairo to stand trial.

The sources confirmed the arrest of the cell members was done in coordination between the two countries, pointing to the strength of the Kuwaiti-Egyptian relations at all levels, especially in the area of security. The sources praised the role played by the Kuwaiti authorities which resulted in the arrest of the eight Egyptians.
