Sheikh Salman presents sports revamp strategy to the Cabinet

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 8, (KUNA): Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah on Monday presented a report to the Cabinet on the strategy of the Public Authority for Sports (PAY) to develop Kuwaiti sports. Following the Cabinet’s customary weekly meeting, held at Seif Palace under chairmanship of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, the minister said in a statement that the PAY’s strategy consists of six aspects: the private sports sector, public sports sector, educational sector, sports facilities, sports medicine and privatization.

The report included practical steps taken to put this strategy in place through the government’s development program and plan, mainly supporting technical programs purposed to upgrade the level of athletes in local and external competitions, to support the sports of women and people with special needs, to open new sports clubs in north and south Kuwait, to provide clubs with appropriate financial aid in order to apply partial professionalism in sports, and to restructure the PAY’s sectors, he elaborated. The PAY and the Ministry of Education will also work together to establish joint sports training centers through cooperation between schools and clubs as well as cooperation between public and private universities and colleges, the minister added.

Furthermore, top priority is to be given to developing sports facilities, applying health insurance to national teams and privatizing public clubs, he pointed out. At the onset of the Cabinet’s weekly meeting, the ministers were apprised of a couple of letters sent to His Highness the Amir by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on bilateral relations.

They were then briefed on a letter sent to His Highness the Prime Minister by UK Prime Minister David Cameron on the latter’s planned visit to Kuwait, together with another letter to His Highness the Prime Minister from his Albanian counterpart Edi Rama, thanking Kuwait’s support to significant projects in his country. Afterwards, First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah briefed the Cabinet on the outcomes of the recent international donors conference on Syria in London, in which he was part of His Highness the Amir’s accompanying delegation to the gathering.

He also kept them posted on the outcomes of the meeting held between His Highness the Amir and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, which reflected deep historical relations between both friendly countries. In this context, the Cabinet appreciated His Highness the Amir’s participation in the London conference, which reflected His Highness the Amir’s much care for the humanitarian tragedy of the Syrian people. Finally, the Cabinet discussed several political reports on the current Arab and international developments.
