KUWAIT CITY, Dec 22: The Criminal Court Thursday sentenced Sheikh Khalifa Al-Sabah in absentia to one-year imprisonment with hard labor and ordered AbdulRaheem Al-Roumi, Majid Al-Asfour and a media presenter Ali Hussein to pay a fine of KD 5,000 each. It also referred the civil aspect of the case to a special tribunal. The suspects were accused of defaming and insulting the National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim in a television program.

Case suspended: The Court of Appeals presided over by Judge Saad Mitwali suspended the case No. 2444/2013 on the storming of the parliament premises, on the basis that some of the suspects are currently serving as Members of the Parliament. It is worth mentioning that the State Security case was filed against 68 individuals including former MPs and current MPs Waleed Al-Tabtabaie, Jama’an Al-Harbash and Muhammad Barrak Al-Mutairi. According to the case file, the Public Prosecution cited misleading evidence, inadequate inferences, manipulation of documents, wrong application and distortion of the law as reasons for appealing the previous verdict on the acquittal of the defendants. It urged the court to cancel the verdict of the lower court and impose harsh penalties on the defendants.
