Rise in suicides raises concern

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 15: Three people committed suicide recently — a Lebanese and two citizens; thereby, sounding the alarm as many people took their own lives through various ways and the number of suicide cases from January to November 2021 reached 120 or 12 suicides per month according to official statistics, reports Al- Qabas daily quoting sources from the security sector. Sources disclosed that most of those who committed suicide are members of Asian communities and the suicide rate increased during the corona pandemic.

Sources said the security authorities decided to deport expatriates who attempted to commit suicide after the number of suicide attempt cases doubled, most of whom jumped from Sheikh Jaber Bridge. Sources confirmed that police stations frequently receive reports on attempted suicide among domestic works, indicating Kuwait Firefighting Force has foiled the attempts of several Asians to commit suicide since the beginning of the corona crisis.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Bureau announced recently that it is currently working with government agencies to study the factors that led to the remarkable increase in the number of citizens and expatriates who committed suicide. Chairman of the bureau’s Complaints and Grievances Committee Ali Al-Baghli, said: “Three suicide cases in one day should be enough to prompt the entire society to take action. Kuwait recorded the highest suicide rate in its history in 2020.”
