Marriage and divorce rate increases in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, July 30: With Kuwait recovering from the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2021 witnessed remarkable social activity among citizens. It recorded the highest rates of marriage and divorce in five years, with an increase in the marriage rate by 28.9 percent, and a corresponding increase in the divorce rate by 13.7 percent, which is the highest rate in five years, reports Al-Rai daily. During the period between 2017 and 2021 as per a recent statistic issued by the Central Statistical Bureau, it became clear that the highest marriage rate was in 2021.

The number of marriages in which one of the parties was a Kuwaiti reached 13,804, including 11,322 marriages between Kuwaitis at a rate of 82 percent. The number of Kuwaiti marriages to a non-Kuwaiti was nearly 1,783, or 13 percent. The highest rate of marriage between Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis was recorded in January 2021 with a total of 1295 marriages with Kuwaiti men, and 1,197 marriages with Kuwaiti women.

On the other hand, divorce rate in 2021 was the highest in the five years of comparison. It reached 13.7 percent for Kuwaiti men with a total of 6,205 divorce cases, including 5,144 cases of divorce with a Kuwaiti woman, and 1,061 cases with a non-Kuwaiti woman. The year 2020 is considered the lowest in the number of divorce cases during the period from 2017 to 2021, as it was 4,661 cases for Kuwaiti men and 4,294 cases for Kuwaiti women.
