Swarms of desert locusts invaded Horn of Africa to Yemen and Saudi Arabia’s agricultural areas in four Saudi regions, namely Riyadh, Qassim, Hail and the Eastern region in past few days.
Kuwait has become threatened by the locust attack on its soil and agricultural areas in the southern borders, as it has happened in April last year, but the opinions of experts point towards warning against locusts arriving from Iran prompting the General Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries to take the necessary measures to protect the agricultural area of Abdali farms reports Al Rai.
Sources revealed that the authorities have been in contact with the Saudi counterparts to follow the locust movement, as the kingdom is still in control of the situation, pointing out that the wind movement contributes greatly to the movement of locust swarms.
Sources emphasized that all necessary measures had been taken to repel a possible locust attack, by equipping the emergency team and the mechanisms that carry insecticide sprinklers, expressing that locust would not reach Kuwait.
Executive Secretary of the Desert Locust Control Authority in the central region of the Food and Agriculture Organization, Dr. Mamoun Al-Alawi, confirmed that locusts have three seasons, winter, spring and summer, and currently it breeds in the Horn of Africa, especially in Ethiopia and Somalia, in Kenya, swarms multiply. In its winter season in March and April there is an unprecedented threat to food security and livelihoods in the region.
Locusts arrived in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the eastern coast of Iran and Pakistan and numbered in billions. The only way to combat it is by spraying with pesticides, whether with portable devices on the shoulders or with cars, but for large countries that have large areas, they need to spray with planes. Kuwait succeeded last year in fighting locusts with minimal losses thanks to its rapid movement and the use of equipment to spray locusts. But the fear is that the locusts may invade from the Iranian side, depending on the direction of the wind.
