Literate among abusers as widespread use of various drugs raises ‘MoI’ alarm

KUWAIT CITY, March 27: The Ministry of Interior has sounded an alarm against the spread of drugs in the Kuwaiti society in large percentages, as shown by the results of a field study that included 354 users (most of them educated and between ages 18 and 44) who were arrested by the Ministry of the Interior, reports Al-Rai daily.

The study which was held under the title ‘Personal and Social Factors Related to Drug Abuse’ and prepared by Director-General of the Directorate General for Drug Control Brigadier Bader Al-Ghadouri, Dr Aziz Bahloul Al-Dhafiri and Ayed Al-Humaidan, under the supervision of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Criminal Security Affairs Major-General Khalid Al-Dayeen.

The study shows male drug abusers significantly topped the females who accounted for 94.6% while the percentage of females was 5.4%. Kuwaitis outnumbered other nationalities in the percentage of drug users, at a rate of 73.2 percent compared to 26.8 percent for non- Kuwaitis. In the paradoxical case of the study, those with a high school diploma came in first place with 33.05%, holders of intermediate school certificate came second with 27.97%, and holders of diploma came third with 19.21%, and holders of university degrees came fourth (13.36 percent) holders of elementary school certificate came fifth 3.93% the illiterate (2.54 percent).

As expected, the unemployed accounted for 39.27 per cent – the highest rate of unemployment, second came the civil servants, 27.68 per cent, and third in government military personnel while the percentage for employees in the private sector fell by 13.56 percent.
The percentage of employees in the category of “employment support and pensioners” rose by 0.28 percent each. The unmarried group accounted for 68.36 percent, followed by 25.14 percent of married couples, and 6.5 percent of the unemployed. According to the governorates, Al-Jahra ranked first with (20.9%), followed by Hawalli (18.08%), Mubarak Al Kabeer (16.39%), Al Farwaniya (16.1%) and Al-Ahmadi (14.41%) and the Capital Governorate (14.12%) simultaneously.
