Kuwaiti citizen gets life in prison for killing his friend over dispute

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 18: The Criminal Court sentenced a Kuwaiti citizen to life in prison for allegedly killing his friend inside an apartment in Salmiya during an argument over a former dispute between them.

According to the case file, the suspect killed his friend by shooting him inside an apartment of a residential building in Salmiya area. Later in the hospital, the victim succumbed to the serious injury he sustained from the gunshot. The defendant confessed to the crime when securitymen arrested him and interrogated him. He was subsequently referred to the Public Prosecution.

Ruling Jan 25: The Court of Appeals presided over by Judge Najib Al-Mulla has fixed the session of Jan 25 for issuing verdict on the appeal filed by Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad, Public Prosecution and Al-Watan TV Channel against the verdict of the Court of First Instance which sentenced Sheikh Al-Fahad to six months in prison with hard labor and KD 1,000 for suspending the execution of the verdict. The case is concerning the alleged attack on some officials of the Public Prosecution and the Attorney General over discussion of the tape scandal on the TV channel.

Counsel to Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad affirmed that his client has high respect for the Attorney General but he cannot be a judge over the allegation against Sheikh Al-Fahad. He declared that the allegations against his client was changed without notifying his defense counsel, reiterating that his client affirmed his respect for the Public Prosecution during the interview on Al-Watan TV Channel. Meanwhile, the defense counsel to Al-Watan TV requested the defense team to oppose an appeal filed by the Public Prosecution and support the verdict of the Court of First Instance which had cleared them of the allegations.

It is noteworthy that the Public Prosecution filed an appeal against the verdict of the Criminal Court, which acquitted Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad of issuing malicious statements against His Highness the Amir without authorization from Amiri Diwan and violating the decision of the Attorney General to ban discussions on the contentious issue relating to Kuwait. It also requested for stiffer penalty over alleged attack on the judiciary, which earned him six months jail term with hard labor and KD 1,000 for suspension of the verdict.

Iranian acquitted: The Criminal Court acquitted an Iranian expatriate who was accused of attempting to smuggle large quantity of medical equipment and materials worth KD 50,000 out of the country. According to the case, which went viral on social media, the General Customs Department had received a tip-off that the suspect was planning to smuggle medical equipment and materials out of the country to take to Iran. When the goods were stored inside the warehouse of the suspect’s company, verification of the company’s data revealed that the stored equipment to be imported were specified on the customs document as used materials, foodstuff, clothing items and watercoolers.

However, when the goods were inspected by the Customs officers, they discovered 16 cartons of X-ray machines, seven Xray monitors, one dialysis machine, eight optical diagnosis machines, 19 heart pumping machines, 11 blood testing machines, 14 other medical equipment, 9 cartons of surgical materials, 110 medical X-ray equipment and two sonar bags.
