Kuwait remembers liberation heroes

Amir greets citizens, residents on festivals

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 26, (KUNA): Commemorating the 28th Anniversary of Liberation on Feb 25, Monday, the Kuwaiti people will be remembering the leaders and heroes of the anniversary who took all necessary measures to bring freedom to Kuwait and its people.

Since the early hours of August 1990 Iraqi invasion, the heroes of liberation vowed unchain Kuwait from the unlawful aggression, which befell upon it. Thanks to the wise leadership of the late Amir His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the late Father Amir His Highness Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah — who was a Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister — as well as the assistance of the Kuwaiti people, the country was able to gain support of the international community and to achieve liberation.

As soon as the aggression took place, the world condemned it and the UN Security Council issued a host of decisive resolutions, starting with Resolution 660, which demanded an immediate withdrawal of the Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Then other ones followed under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. On Nov 29, 1990, the Iraqi regime was dealt a surprising blow with UNSC Resolution 678, which called for the use of military force to liberate Kuwait from the Iraqi aggression.

Aside from Kuwait’s own heroes, the crisis produced champions from the region and the world, chiefl y amongst them were late Saudi King Fahad bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and late 41st US president George H. W. Bush. In his address to the Saudi people on Aug 3, 1990 — a day after the invasion — King Fahad said that he felt pain for the plight of the Kuwaiti people, deeming the Iraqi invasion as unethical especially coming from a fellow Arab country. Along with King Fahad, George H. W. Bush played a crucial role in rallying efforts to pass UNSC Resolution 660.

The late US president also launched “Operation Desert Shield” on Aug 7, 1990 where some US 500,000 troops — around 74 percent of an international alliance — arrived in Saudi Arabia. On Jan 21, the US president managed to convince Congress to use force to liberate Kuwait from the Iraqi invasion, resulting in “Operation Desert Storm”, headed by General Norman Schwarzkopf and Saudi Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

While those leaders played an important role in the liberation, the Kuwaiti people will also not forget citizens and expatriates who laid their very own lives in the quest to rid Kuwait from the atrocities committed by the invading Iraqi forces. His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah on Tuesday congratulated citizens and residents on the 58th anniversary of National Day and the 28th anniversary of Liberation Day.

His Highness the Amir appreciated their joyful and exuberant participation in various public festivities that refl ected highly civilized conduct, and national unity and amity. His Highness Sheikh Sabah urged everyone to be well aware of, and grateful for, the bliss of liberation, security and welfare, to maintain national unity and to harness all potentials and energies for development and prosperity. The efforts of all state agencies involving police and army to ensure smooth national celebrations marking the country’s national occasions were also highly commended by His Highness the Amir
