KUWAIT CITY, Nov 4: The head of pharmacy at Al-Adan Hospital, Hussein Al-Enezi, announced the arrival of the most expensive medicine in the world for the treatment of cases of spinal muscular dystrophy. The treatment is through injection, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Enezi said in a press statement the treatment of these two cases will be under the supervision of the head of the Center for Genetic Diseases Dr Laila Bastaki, Dr Asma Al-Tawari and Dr Sara Al-Enezi.
He explained the drug replaces a damaged gene with a healthy gene responsible for the production of protein nourishing the spinal cord muscles without any side effects, and enables the patient to produce healthy protein naturally which protects the muscles of the respiratory system, the heart and movement, so that the patient does not need artificial breathing just after treatment, pointing out that the injection is once in a lifetime treatment.
Al-Enezi praised the Government of Kuwait and the Ministry of Health represented by the Undersecretary of the Pharmaceutical and Food Control Sector Dr Abdullah Al-Bader for providing such drugs since similar cases were sent abroad for treatment and cost the state a lot of money.
He pointed out that a specialized team from the pharmacy in Adan Hospital has been formed to follow up the administration of the drug until the patient arrives with the medical team under the supervision of the head of the department. Al-Rai has revealed last month that the Health Ministry would buy the medicine, most expensive in the world.
