Lata Mangeshkar Dies At 92 After Being Hospitalized With COVID

Mumbai, Feb 6: Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar died in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92. Mangeshkar’s death brings down the curtain on an era in the Indian film industry. Mangeshkar had been diagnosed with Covid-19 and pneumonia, and was admitted in Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital. The singer was in the ICU and under the observation of doctors.

Born as Hema Mangeshkwar on September 28, 1929, in Madhya Pradesh, Lata Mangeshkar had music in her genes. Her father Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar was a Marathi and Konkanni musician and a theatre actor from Goa. During her lifetime, Mangeshkar worked with music greats from various generations as she delivered iconic numbers that remain relevant to this day.

Lata Mangeshkar, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, was an icon of Indian cinema, having sung playback for an extensive list of Hindi films; Lata had recorded songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and few foreign languages. Ms Mangeshkar, who belonged to a prominent musical family, also composed music as well as produced a handful of films. She was popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India.’
