KUWAIT CITY, Sept 20: Fees in the domestic labor recruitment market has once again soared to a new record level; with some recruitment offices charging as much as KD1,250 for hiring a domestic worker, reports Al-Jarida daily quoting sources. Sources pointed out this is in addition to the KD500 fee for the domestic labor recruitment platform; hence, the total cost could reach KD1,750. Sources told the daily that some offices do not comply with the KD890 recruitment fee set by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry due to the lack of workers from labor importing countries, while the citizens’ demand for domestic workers remains high.

Aside from compensating the losses that the offices incurred due to the closure of the airport and ban on the entry of domestic workers for a year and a half into the Corona pandemic, certain fees are added for the recruitment of domestic workers, sources disclosed. Sources said these offices are circumventing the decision of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry by putting KD890 in the recorded invoice and the remaining amount is paid in cash. Sources stated the employer must also pay KD500 upon registration on BelSalama platform if the domestic worker is unvaccinated.

Earlier, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a decision to reduce the fee for recruiting domestic workers through the offices from KD990 to KD890; while it specified a fee of KD390 maximum if the employer hires the worker directly, provided the worker’s passport copy is submitted to the office.
