Dams, lakes, reservoirs being built to hold excess water

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 2: Government agencies and parliamentary monitoring committees are racing against time to implement a network of water reservoirs in residential areas and cities to avoid repetition of the floods that hit the country during the last rainy season, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Concerned authorities yesterday started carrying out intensive work on the seventh ring road and rain gathering areas. The Ministries of Works, Oil, Interior, Defense, Public Authority for Environment, Public Authority for Roads and Transport, and National Guard followed the site works of the reservoir projects, which are scheduled to be completed before November (the expected rainy season in the country).

The government committee is scheduled to build a set of reservoirs, which will be in the form of “dams, artificial lakes, parallel channels, outlets to sea and flooding” for 11 sites distributed between north and south of the country.

The Supreme Committee and executive teams on ground are implementing earth mounds in the city of Sabah Al-Ahmad through the formation of a set of lakes and diversion channels as well as increasing water lines and pipes to deliver water and treated wastewater to the tanks, and dumping pumps away from the city.

On the other hand, Ministry of Public Works and Kuwait Municipality teams have cleaned manholes as well as internal and external roads of Sabah Al-Ahmad, Al-Khairan and Fahaheel Road.

They confirmed operation and workability of the emergency plan for Mangaf Tunnel and other main and secondary roads in the interior and exterior roads.

Work is also underway to establish a natural reserve east of the West Abdullah Al-Mubarak area to protect it from rain and urgently link the sewage to drainage stations to avoid gatherings that took place from seventh ring road last year.

Among the areas targeted for reservoirs and lakes are Fahaheel-Sabahiya intersection, Ahmadi plateau, Sabah Al-Ahmad City, Seventh Ring Road, the intersection of Doha and Qairawan, Shedadiya, Sabah Al-Nasser and places of water gatherings along the Fahaheel Road.
