Court pulls ‘Watan TV’ licence after daily newspaper closure

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 22: The Administrative Court decided to withdraw the commercial license of Al-Watan TV Channel after losing its capital which led the channel to stop broadcasting. In January this year, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued an administration decision to withdraw the license issued to Dar Al Watan Journalism Printing and Publishing Company as it violated the provisions on minimum capital limit. Previously, the courts of Cassation and Appeals upheld the First Instance Court’s verdict on the closure of the newspaper, whereas the higher courts rejected the petition filed by Al-Watan daily newspaper against the decisions taken by the ministries of Commerce, Industry and Information which led to its closure.

Cases see rise: The State Security cases rose by 50 percent during 2015 compared to last year, reports Al- Qabas daily quoting a senior security source. The source explained that it is the first time the number of cases has jumped to 65.

The source pointed out the Public Prosecutor has investigated all these cases and referred them to the Criminal Court without shelving any case. The source explained the Capital Prosecution has investigated 61 cases while the other four cases were investigated in other prosecutors’ offices stressing that the cases of joining banned groups such as (DAESH) or any other group that works to demolish the basic systems in the state) are ranked first and are 16 in number involving 94 defendants.

The source added cases related to spreading false rumors come next, followed by carrying out hostile acts against another State, financing of terrorism, harming the national interests of the State, and abusing HH the Amir, in addition to possession of weapons and ammunition. The source pointed to the cases of premeditated murder such as that of the bombing of Imam al-Sadiq mosque and possession of weapons as was the case with the Abdali cell
