Court cancels citizen’s 5-year jail with hard labor, KD 5,000 fine

KUWAIT CITY, July 16: The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Abdullah Al-Othman, cancelled the verdict of the First Instance Court which sentenced a citizen in absentia to five years in prison with hard labor, immediate execution and fine of KD 5,000 for possessing hashish and driving under the infl uence of drugs. Details of the case indicate that an officer in the Capital Criminal Investigation Department was on duty at 2:00 am along Al-Blajat Street in Salmiya when he spotted the only vehicle parked beside a restaurant and the engine was running with the suspect inside. The officer got suspicious so he went to check the vehicle where he to found the suspect in a totally abnormal condition. When the officer searched the suspect, it was confirmed that the latter consumed hashish just before the former confronted him. However, Attorney Saleh Al-Mutairi, the defendant’s lawyer, argued that the arrest and search procedures were invalid due to the absence of incriminating evidence. The court then acquitted the citizen.

11 people arrested: Public Security Sector, under the supervision of the Assistant Undersecretary for Public Security Affairs Major General Ibrahim Al-Tarrah arrested 11 wanted individuals and violators of law on Thursday, July 14, reports Al-Rai daily. In Farwaniya, Capital, Jahra and Ahmadi governorates, securitymen arrested two citizens, a Saudi and a Yemeni expatriate who are wanted for their involvement in different cases. They also arrested a Bedoun man in possession of drugs as well as a Kuwaiti citizen who is wanted by law for a debt worth KD 45,000. Securitymen also arrested two Jordanians and an Iranian in possession of a sachet containing heroin. They arrested two Sri Lankans, who were reported as absconding, in possession of 58 bottles of alcohol. All arrested individuals were referred to the relevant authorities for necessary legal action.

KD 300 swindled: A Kuwaiti citizen in his 40s filed a case against a compatriot accusing him of disappearing after swindling him of KD 3,000 under the pretext of investing in a business, reports Al-Rai daily. According to security sources, the citizen reported against the suspect at Mubarak Al Kabeer Police Station, explaining that he knows the suspect personally and the latter had deceived him into investing in a business which turned out to be fake.
