Boris Johnson resigns after mounting pressure from Conservatives, opposition

LONDON, July 7: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned from his post on Thursday after being pressured by members of his Conservative Party. In a short speech, Johnson said that he agreed with the head of 1922 committee of conservative MPs Sir Graham Brady that he would resign and the process should commence to name a successor.

Details on finding a new Prime Minister will be announced next week, indicated Johnson who revealed that a new team would continue to lead the government until a new premier was elected. Boris Johnson affirmed that he could not continue to lead the government with the amounting pressure from his party’s MPs at parliament.

Since Tuesday, several members of Boris Johnson’s government, amounting to 42 officials, declared their resignation from their posts. Johnson had been pressured to resign ever since investigations into illegal parties, held at 10 Downing Street during COVID-19 lockdown in 2020-2021, showed the Prime Minister had violated regulations set by his government during such difficult times. The Prime Minister was engulfed in another scandal when he appointed MP Chris Pincher in the government despite the latter involvement in sexual misconduct. All of the resigning ministers and opposition official blamed Boris Johnson’s recklessness in following regulations and rules that a top official of the government should be following on principle.(KUNA)
